Bravo Bash: Celebrating Our Dancers at Tutu School Renton

There is always a moment during Bravo Bash when I look around the theater and wish I could bottle up the feeling in the room.

This past Saturday, our Tutu School Renton dancers joined our friends from Tutu School Tacoma for our sixth Bravo Bash performance, our very special take on a kids ballet recital. The Unicorn Ballet Ball gave us so many of those moments. The stage was glowing, the costumes were beautiful, families filled the theater, and our dancers were ready to share what they had been learning with some of their biggest fans.

There was twirling and applause, proud little solos and excited waves from the stage, teachers beaming at their dancers, and more than a few wonderfully unexpected moments that come with putting young children on the big stage.

Mostly, though, there was celebration. Everyone in the room was there to cheer for our dancers, and you could feel it.

Let the Show Begin

Before our dancers took the stage, another very special group of performers kicked off The Unicorn Ballet Ball: our Bravo Bash Dads!

The Dad Dance is a newer tradition for us, but I already can’t imagine Bravo Bash without it. Watching a group of dads take over the stage, have a little fun, and get an entire theater laughing and cheering sets exactly the right tone for the show. Performing can be exciting, joyful, and even a little silly, and our dads make sure the dancers know that before the first performance group twirls across the stage.

Then it was our dancers’ turn.

One group at a time, our dancers stepped into the lights with their teachers beside them. The music they knew from class filled the theater, familiar choreography came to life on a big stage, and suddenly all of those little moments of learning became something they could share with the people who love them most.

And you could see the pride everywhere.

In the dancer who couldn’t wait for their solo. In the child searching the audience until they spotted their family. In the teacher smiling as a dancer remembered what came next. In the families holding up phones, clapping, calling “Bravo!” and soaking up every second.

A Little Courage and a Lot of Bravo

One of my favorite moments from the morning belonged to one of our littlest dancers.

A Tutu Toddler felt unsure after stepping onto the stage, so Dad, who accompanies his child for this division, scooped up his dancer and kept right on dancing. When it was time for the individual solos, they slowly made their way toward center stage together.

And then the whole room seemed to understand the assignment.

“Bravo!”

The theater filled with applause and encouragement, and with Dad nearby and a room full of people cheering, this little dancer found the confidence to finish the solo before proudly jumping back into his arms.

It was such a sweet moment, but what stayed with me just as much was the response from the audience.

That feeling of being surrounded by people who want you to succeed is a pretty wonderful thing to give a child.

More Than a Ballet Recital

Saturday was our sixth Bravo Bash, and each one makes me appreciate how special it is to watch our dancers grow.

We have Renton families who have joined us for Bravo Bash after Bravo Bash, and children we first welcomed into our studio as Tutu Toddlers who are now dancing through our older divisions. With each performance, we get another little snapshot of who they’re becoming: a little more independent, a little more confident, and increasingly proud of what they can do.

Our teachers get to see that growth from a particularly special vantage point. They have been beside these dancers in class, celebrating the small breakthroughs and helping them learn their dances little by little, and Bravo Bash is their chance to stand beside them once more and watch it all come together.

There is so much pride on that stage, and not just from the dancers.

This Bravo Bash felt especially celebratory because our Renton dancers got to share the theater with our friends from Tutu School Tacoma. For one day, our two communities became one enormous cheering section. The theater was filled with parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, and friends, sometimes 10 or 15 people gathered to watch one little dancer’s few minutes in the spotlight.

When you’re little, having that many people show up just to celebrate you feels pretty magical.

Until Our Next Bravo

By the end of the morning, dancers were leaving the stage with performance gifts in hand, families were taking photos, teachers were giving hugs, and the theater was buzzing with everyone sharing their favorite moments.

This is why Bravo Bash continues to be one of my favorite days at Tutu School.

We want our dancers to have the experience of stepping onto a real stage, looking out at an audience filled with people they love, and feeling proud of what they’ve accomplished. We want them to see their teachers beside them and hear a whole room cheering them on. Most of all, we want them to begin to see themselves up there and think:

I belong here.

If you’re looking through these photos and imagining your own dancer at their first Bravo Bash, we’d love to welcome you to Tutu School Renton. Dancers prepare right in their regular classes, with no additional rehearsals, their teachers join them onstage, and each group gets a short and sweet turn in the spotlight, including a special solo moment for every dancer.

They don’t always walk onto the stage without butterflies. Sometimes doing something exciting comes with a few butterflies.

But then the music starts. Their teacher is there. Their friends are beside them. Their family is watching.

And an entire theater is ready to cheer.

And speaking of our next Bravo Bash, we have one more bit of magic to look forward to. For the very first time, our littlest dancers, our Baby Ballerinas, will be invited to join the celebration! There’s something especially sweet about imagining some of our tiniest dancers having their very first Bravo Bash moment, and we can’t wait to welcome them to the stage.

For now, we’re still holding onto all the magic of The Unicorn Ballet Ball and feeling incredibly proud of every dancer who stepped onto that stage.

That’s the magic of Bravo Bash: one little dancer, one big stage, and a whole community behind them saying, “You’ve got this.”
