What to Expect at Your Toddler’s Very First Dance Class

You have finally taken the first step, and signed up your toddler for a trial class at Tutu School. Now you’re wondering “What happens next?”

When you first twirl into our studio, you will be greeted by a Tutu School Teacher, who will show you around the studio space. Our toddler classes, Tutu Toddler, require a caretaker participating on the dance floor; so come prepared to move with your little one.

At this class level, ages can range from 18 months to 3 years of age, and dancers may require varying levels of assistance from their grown up. In a first class, some dancers may also opt to observe rather than participate fully in class, new adventures can be a big step to take, and our teachers completely understand that. If your little one decides to pause and observe, don’t fret! This gives them an opportunity to gather information about what is happening in the room, and watch their peers.

Here are a couple of ways that you can assist your little dancer during class:

• Holding hands to help with balance when learning and practicing dance steps.
• Carrying them across the floor or while standing so that they can still feel the motion of the dance moves.
• Help them answer questions and make decisions about what props to pick during class.
• Encourage them even if they opt to observe.

Class ends with reading and dancing to a chapter of the ballet story of the month, followed by time to do some coloring to an image from our story book. This gives your little one time to settle after class, and start absorbing all that they learned that day. This is also a great time to ask your teacher any questions you might have, as well as the time when your teacher will tell everyone about upcoming things at the studio and other announcements.

Remember, your first class with your toddler does not have to look a specific way. Talking to your little one is okay and taking breaks is always welcomed. The most important thing is for you and your dancer to have fun and enjoy the magic of dancing!
